Stapedectomy

Stapedectomy is performed for those with otosclerosis. This surgery is performed in an outpatient setting. Surgery is done through the ear canal where the eardrum is reflected forward exposing the middle ear and the bones of hearing.

First the fixation of the stapes bone is confirmed. Once confirmed, the stapes bone and the incus bone are separated. A hole is placed in the footplate of the stapes bone using the argon laser and a prosthesis is placed extending from the incus bone into the hole in the stapes bone. This procedure results in almost complete restoration of the hearing to the level of the sensorineural hearing or the highest level possible with your inner ear.
